Makai Tenshō 魔界転生 (1981)

a.k.a. Samurai Reincarnation. Region 1 with subtitles, for what it's worth. Bizarre would be putting it mildly, so I'll skip the detailed summary. The lead characters are Shiro (played by Sawada Kenji), a flamboyant, slain Christian samurai turned evil demon who's out for bloody vengeance, and our hero Jubei (played by Chiba Shinichi), the one-eyed swordmaster from the Yagyū clan. After 30 minutes I was beginning to fear I'd missed Hiroyuki as one of the many random bodies, but the next scene promisingly opened up on a happy-go-lucky ninja village.

Kirimaru (Sanada) returns to the ninja village with a bunny for the kids. Could he be more doomed? He doesn't even have time to unload his pack before some bad samurai mercilessly attack the ninja village and kill everyone. In a rare display of good aesthetic taste, Shiro offers the dying Kirimaru immortality. As a demon, of course. Um, while stroking Kirimaru's arm and kissing his hand. Zombie!Kirimaru goes after the bad samurai to avenge the slaughter of his village. Uplighting = evil.

Zombie!Kirimaru just before butchering the bad samurai. Demon Kirimaru seals his doom by meeting and falling in love with an innocent girl mourning her family. You know this can't end well. Not surprisingly, Shiro isn't happy to see his demon boy-toy moping over some girl. He offers some friendly words of advice... ... He urges Kirimaru to rape her.

Then the scene takes an unexpected turn (no, really, I wasn't expecting this!) when Shiro kisses Kirimaru... ...which is completely understandable, if you ask me... ...and, by the way, this is the tenderest love scene in the movie... ...despite the fact that Shiro keeps telling Kirimaru to go rape the innocent orphan girl.

Later, he begs Jubei to kill him. Now that he's avenged his village, he hates being a demon. Jubei tells him to fight the evil inside him. Kirimaru reforms, finds the girl, promises he won't hurt her, and they start to run off together. But Shiro shows up -- and you can guess the rest. Poor Kirimaru. An interesting choice for a promo still.
